Conclusion
The Virginia and the Monitor may not have been as efficient as the ships that soon succeeded them, but the Battle of Hampton Roads nevertheless changed the way navies around the world operated. After the Civil War this advancement continued, and soon motor-driven metal ships were the standard for all commercial and military applications.
